Sometimes it is best to take the road less travelled and many of us need to do something like this now and again to see other parts of Australia that many people have never seen before. Obviously it depends on the type of vehicle that you have but if you have a land cruiser for example that is built to go off-road, it seems a real shame that you never do. I’m sure there are times when you have turned left or right when you could have took the other way and explored a road that wasn’t the best but it might have taken you somewhere really exciting.

- Always take a friend – You should never try to go off-roading by yourself because then you’re just asking for trouble. It always makes sense to have a fellow off-roader with you in case you run into difficulties and you need someone to pull you out. There are many things that could happen when you take the road less travelled and it could be something as simple as having engine problems or you don’t have any smartphone service.
- Invest in quality tyres – The normal road tyres that you have on your vehicle may not be suitable for off-roading and so you need to look into getting the right kind of tyres so that you have the grip that you need when you encounter mud or sand. As well as buying the right kind of quality tyres, be sure to have a spare and always check that it is properly inflated before you set off.
- Always bring the right gear – There are some essential things that you should never leave home without but some things that you need to make sure are there should be water, a first aid kit, some essential toilet roll, stalls to cook food on and of course something to eat. Take a sleeping bag in case you have to stay out on the road for the night and bring along some snacks and extra clothing as well.
Always make sure that your vehicle is ready for off-roading and so check the air in your tyres, make sure that the engine oil is topped up and most importantly, make sure that you have enough fuel. It pays to also carry some extra tools with you.
